AND IN THAT MOMENT, I SWEAR WE WERE INFINITE

Nighteye is a weblog written by Dennis Ihlemann, a 21-year-old design aficionado hailing from Denmark. This site is a collection of his thoughts on movies, games, music, television, technology, anime, books, design, photography, typography, life, etc. Oh, and with a bit of lolcat thrown in here and there for good measure.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is powerful cinema at its finest. So unbelievably good, you simply have to watch this. But be warned, it will break your heart.

Recent Magical Movies

My girlfriend and I have watched a lot of movie lately, some together, some I’ve watched by myself. Some were magical, some average, but mostly decent at the very minimum.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (#61 on IMDb) was freaking phenomenal. So beautiful. That and Slumdog Millionaire (#46 on IMDb) are my two favorite movies this year. Just wanted to make that clear since I recently said that only Slumdog was my favorite of 2008, but that was before I had a chance to watch TCCoBB and I figured that it was too late for another movie to be as good as that.

Other movies I’ve bought and enjoyed recently, both by Tim Burton: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The latter I watched for the very first time with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it immensely! In fact, we loved it.

Then there’s the classics like Dumb & Dumber and Forrest Gump.

The Basketball Diaries with Leonardo DiCaprio was heartbreaking. That guy can sure act! One of our favorite movies to watch together is Catch Me If You Can. On that note we’ve also bought What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which I’ve always wanted to watch.

Yes Man (Jim Carrey) was so good we wanted to watch it twice at the cinema. And we did. That leads me to The Truman Show, which should get here soon.

Then there’s Memento, which I’ve only watched once a few years ago.

So many movies…

Random Thoughts in the Midst of Chaos

  • Slumdog Millionaire is my favorite movie this year and it so deserves to be a huge success at the Oscar’s.
  • Fall Out Boy’s new album Folie á Deux is brilliant and has surpassed my expectations, which were rather unrealistic considering that it’s my favorite band. Well done guys.
  • For personal reasons this has been my worst Christmas ever and it’s one I’m eager to forget.
  • I really want this hooded scarf.
  • Yes Man was a really good movie.
  • This Clandestine Industries Mario t-shirt is cool.
  • Let the Right One In, a Swedish horror/drama flick, was incredible.
  • I really want to read the books that Slumdog Millionaire and Let the Right One In are based on. I’ll probably buy ‘em soon.
  • Another good movie I’ve watched lately is Zack & Miri Make a Porno.
  • Thanks to Yes Man I’ve discovered how great of a band Journey is.
  • I’m hoping 2009 shapes up to be better than what life has been like lately.

    Slumdog Millionaire

Here’s the trailer for what looks like one of the most promising movies of 2008. I would do anything to be able to watch this right now.

    Hancock

    Hancock

Finally saw Hancock and I must say I was pretty underwhelmed. It felt short (it is short clocking in at just 92 minutes, but it felt even shorter) and as the credits rolled I felt like I hadn’t even experienced an entire movie. Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman all did a pretty good job, but at the same time I’ve seen better performances in my life. The twist involving Theron was pretty surprising, but it fell flat for me and everything was kinda corny from then on to be brutally honest with you. The first half of the movie was way better, so this is definitely a DVD I won’t be getting. A rental, perhaps. But purchasing the movie? In the words of Will Smith: “Aww HELL naw!”.

    Sex Drive Trailer

Judging from the trailer Sex Drive looks like it’s gonna be the next American Pie, Road Trip, Euro Trip, etc. The reason I’m even posting this though is actually because Fall Out Boy will appear (as they do for a second in the trailer) in the movie and that’s something I’m pretty excited about even though it may only be for a brief moment. It will be released October 10th in the US.

First Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Trailer Released

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The trailer for the sixth Harry Potter movie “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” has just been released. Frankly, I haven’t even read the book (only 1-5), but I’m still very excited for the movie. I can’t believe the movies are already catching up on me, because I swore I would read the entire series before the movies came out. Well, I guess I still have some time left.

    Birds of America Poster

    Birds of America

The movie Birds of America doesn’t do much for me (judging from this preview at least, despite it having an impressive 8.3 score on IMDb so far) but the poster is just a piece of art, so beautiful. The composition, colors and typography are all brilliantly executed.

    The Wackness

    The Wackness

The other day I watched The Wackness, one of the best movies I’ve watched in a while. The description below will do a much better job explaining everything, so here you go:

It’s the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana—but change is in the air. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against “crimes” like noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step daughter (Olivia Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet, and funny coming of age story.

You have to watch it, it was just great, funny, sad — yeah, just about every emotion imaginable. I highly recommend it.
