I could’ve sworn that I’ve talked about The Flat Earth Society (people who believe the Earth is flat, not round) before somewhere, but I can’t seem to find anything, so here goes. Yesterday I spent a good portion of the day (thanks to this BBC news article) reading the Flat Earth Society’s forums and particularly the FAQ, which you should read before posting on the website. While most people will think flat-earthers are lunatics, I must say that I’m impressed with the lengths these people are willing to go to explain such things as gravity (or lack thereof according to their theories), what the world really looks like (picture 1 and 2), but at the end of the day this is not something I believe in, I just find it interesting for some reason, I mean I love conspiracy theories! One of the more intriguing parts of what they believe in is that the world is surrounded by a huge 150 feet tall ice wall (picture), as evident in the world maps I previously linked to and they really do believe that that’s the way it must look if the world is flat and it apparently holds in the water of the world.
The Ice Wall was discovered by Sir James Clark Ross, a polar explorer who was among the first to venture to Antarctica in an attempt to determine the position of the South Magnetic Pole. Upon confronting the massive vertical front of of ice he famously remarked
“It was … an obstruction of such character as to leave no doubt in my mind as to our future proceedings, for we might as well sail through the cliffs of Dover as to penetrate such a mass.
It would be impossible to conceive a more solid-looking mass of ice; not the smallest appearance of any rent or fissure could we discover throughout its whole extent, and the intensely bright sky beyond it but too plainly indicated the great distance to which it reached southward.”
When confronted with questions like “how come NASA’s pictures clearly show that the Earth is round?”, they simply reply: “they’re faked”. Yup, it’s all just a cover up and according to their FAQ they don’t know why anyone would hide the fact that the Earth is flat except for something to do with money. They strongly feel that the government has something to gain in hiding this. I, for one, find this very entertaining, because as I said, I love conspiracy theories.
That’s wierd. I’m quite sure I’ve posted on this subject in here berfore, I just can’t seem to find it anywhere on the site…
But I know for sure that you’ve posted that picture before, I just don’t think it was in the same content..Dennis:
Same here, I looked everywhere and right you are, I just used the pic again since it seemed appropriate :)Chico:
Uh uh, I think I found it:
We talked about it in comments :P
Oh that’s right, I’m not totally insane then! ;)Chico:
That’s another issue.. Let’s discuss that another time :PDennis:
I should’ve seen that one coming. Touché.
Speaking of lolcats, I’m having a blast with this site once in a while:
I just love Lolcats ^^
That pic above is actually from that website as evident in the lower part ;)
Oh, and please don’t forget Fail Dogs.
(Wow, this is getting pretty off topic, but as long as it’s for the sake of lolcats I don’t mind lol)
Actually now that I think about it, we’ve never even touched on the subject matter here, so it’s not like we’re really getting off topic all of sudden. Oh well.Chico:
Just to say SOMETHING about the topic:
Flat Earth Soceity = Madness, MADNESS I tell you!
There you go ^^
That’s all I wanted — and I wholeheartedly agree :)
