Say Anything - Baby Girl, I’m A Blur

Buy “Baby Girl, I’m A Blur” by Say Anything on iTunes

I pretty much spent the entire day reading a thread on a forum. But not just any thread, the announcement of Say Anything’s first single from their new album being available on iTunes. So far more than 1500 comments have been left, so AbsolutePunk’s audience are definitely no strangers to Say Anything.

Here are my thoughts on the song and the upcoming album in general.

I love the title of this song. I’m in love with the lyrics, they are amazing! I really love the song! It’s definitely one that grows on you, mostly because it doesn’t really sound like other Say Anything songs. They are a rock band, but since this is the first single from the upcoming album In Defense of the Genre, people who haven’t heard of Say Anything might be surprised by their other songs if this is what they think they can expect. You can always expect great lyrics though, so I guess this song does have something important in common with songs from their previous album “…Is A Real Boy”, which is also a grower and now I consider it one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to. Jason Tate, who’s the owner of AbsolutePunk has the following to say about the single:

First single “Baby Girl, I’m a Blur” pulses with a synth beat and unwinds into a tangle of doodling riffs, fast-strummed guitars, and layers of vocals; Bemis says he actually nailed his vocal in one unexpected take. The track is dancey, slick, and giddy with the obsession of new love: “Pray I’ll find you with your flame-throw eyes and jilted smile / So you can soothe my wounds and drain my bile” Bemis croons.

So far I’ve heard 3 songs from In Defense of the Genre.

Skinny, Mean Man = Awesome and in your face. Fan-fucking-tastic song!
Shiksa (Girlfriend) = Catchy, almost equally awesome, which is saying a lot.
Baby Girl, I’m a Blur = Different, but in an extremely good way.

The first two songs can be heard on the band’s Myspace and the last one can be bought on iTunes as seen above.

Words cannot express how much I’m looking forward to the new album.

Here are the lyrics to “Baby Girl, I’m A Blur”:

Baby girl, I’m a blur
I spoiled, stunted, sickened her.
God and Death are none of my concern
No, philosopher.
Deep in your heart, stitched the key
And only one can set me free from the beast
where I dwell and let the saints all burn in hell.

So take what you want from me, heyyyy
And take all I’ve got from me, heyyyy
You’re with me all the time
The drugs can have my mind, love
You own the rest you’ll find
And you’re with me all the time

On the roof, burning black, the city smoked from the attack
But on the roof, we love the beast to death
The sweat and whiskey breath

So take what you want from me, heyyyy
And take all I’ve got from me, heyyyy
You’re with me all the time
The drugs can have my mind, love
You own the rest you’ll find
And you’re with me all the time

We fall right down
We get back up again
thats how we be
you and me
I would not crowd,
I would not smother you
I’d let you breathe, over me

We’re on a sinking ship, but we’re escaping it
We’re on a sinking ship, but we’re escaping
We’re on a sinking ship, but we’re escaping it
We’re on a sinking ship, we’re escaping

You’re with me all the time
You’re with me all the time
You’re with me all the time
You’re with me all the time

No matter where I go you’re on my mind
I stumble home and pray I’ll find
With your flamethrower eyes and jilted smile
You’ll soothe my wounds and drain my bile

You’re with me all the time.
