Saturday morning I saw the critically acclaimed Korean blockbuster called “The Host”.
Let me just start out by saying that the movie was a mixed bag for me. It started out so awesome I could cry. I couldn’t believe it. A huge monster comes out of the water and starts attacking people. In the middle of the freaking day and it looked awesome! The monster is amazingly detailed and well done. I’m not completely sure, but I think WETA (of Lord of the Rings and King Kong fame) worked on it, which would probably explain why the movie looks this gorgeous.
The good: I liked the main characters of the movie and really felt with them and what they were going through. Outstanding CGI made the movie visually stunning.
The bad: I REALLY hated the parts of the movie that were in English. It’s ok to cast English-speaking actors, but please get good ones then. I’m actually not very demanding when it comes to how good an acting performance should be, but these were very poor. I would also have liked to see more attacks during the day, as the movie unfortunately became quite dark (visually, not storywise) for most of the remaining time.
At the end of the day The Host is one of those movies that I’m glad I got to see, but at the same time I don’t feel like buying the DVD all that much. I might have to watch the movie again sometime though.
Oh, and an upcoming cartoon and theme park based on the movie and also a cell phone and a PSP role-playing-game version have been announced, so that says a lot about just how popular the movie has become.
