Teen Buzz is a ringtone that has been adapted from the so-called Mosquito alarm, which is used to drive away teenagers from stores. In the UK teens are now sharing this with their friends via bluetooth and MMS, as it’s been recorded by “techno-savvy pupils”. The sound can be heard by many people under the age of 20, but as teachers usually are over that age, these kids are getting away with receiving text messages and calls during class (moreso than usual I guess :-P).
The Mosquito technology is said to play on a medical phenomenon called presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss.
It is thought to begin at 20 and first affect the highest frequencies – 18 to 20kHz.
The device was developed by Merthyr Tydfil-based Compound Security.
Listen to Teen Buzz here (if you can hear it that is, I could hear it I think, made me feel slightly uncomfortable):
WARNING: Some people claim that listening to this tone could be damaging your hearing. Listen at your own responsibility.
It can be downloaded (bittorrent) here.

Admin note: The site is currently beeing hammered, due to linking from several big sites.
COMMENTS
Hi,
Here are some more high frequency (15-20 kHz) wave & mp3 files I made - http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/?p=72 - that could be used as ringtones.
Cheers
Dan
Let me first say that I am glad that stores near me aren’t using this technology…I am certainly not a “kid” and I am past the age of 20 (by 10 years) and I can hear that awful sound…why anyone would want their phone to make that sound is beyond me. It’s horrible!!! To subject yourself to that as a ringtone you must be in dire need of text messaging.
koblih:I can hear smth (but what is it?). I am not sure if that sound could be use as ringtone somewhere outside, where are many other noises. :-/
Name (required):please send me jaklac@mediumland.sk
jaklac:please send me (mosqito)
Cake:Hi there. i am over 30 and I definitelly can hear the sound. Awful, very uncomfortable…I’m happy I’m not a techer….
Jaroslavik:The sound is kind of annoying.. :-( But I can still hear it! :-)
JURA:TAK JÁ TEDA NEVÍM , JE MI 36 A RVE MI TO UŠI
svensken:i am 15 years old and cannot hear the sound / noise :(
Logan:No je to nářez :-)
Karel:I am 56, can hear it very clearly although the sound is quite weak. Is it a joke or what?
When I place my headphones on a table two metres from me I can still hear it … in a quiet room…..
Ja slysim jen piskot. Ale jako melodie mi to vubec nepripada.
Patron:Zdravim Čechy. Peknej vlezlej piskot.
Sheba:Hello, please, can yo send it to me in mp3… I don’t like torrents… Pro čechy - pošlete mi to pls. někdo v mp3…
Sheba:Sorry, I must be blind. Nic neposilejte, su slepy…
Vincent:mp3 si můžeš stáhnout z týhle stránky. viz výše
ange lage:i am 19 and i cannot hear anything. are you kiding me?
Jitka:Je mi 28 a slyším to úplně jasně.
Jarda
Ahoj narode!
Hi everyone!
21let
I didnt expected melody.:) Quite quiet… :P
Petr 21yr.
Kdo to neslyší ať si koupí psa, ten to rozhodně odvyje … 41 a slyším to v poho.
Pepa z depa:Je to pytchovina, moje 60-leta mati to slysela uplne v pohode, ja taky.
Vivian:Yipee! Je mi 26 and I can hear that!:-)
Poslouchat bych to dlouho nechtěl. :-)
Michal:Alejde to stahnout snaž se !http://static.orgday.org/orgday/Teen Buzz.mp3
Veolw:No slysim piskani … to je super :D … takove vyzvaneni bych chtel … :D
Koblih:Special FOR all people. Except Czechs :) No, it was bad joke. Stahujte všichni! ;)
http://rapidshare.de/files/21292730/freq.mp3
gwen:a lot of if you can hear it or not has to do with your speakers specifications as well.
ubuster:Most of published mp3s are useless, because the high frequences are cut during the compression. You can open them in a programm like Adobe Audition, then select Spectral Frequency Display, and you will see, that your 56 kbps mp3s are cut at 10 (!!!) kHz. So no wonder, you can’t hear anything. They must be 320 kbps to preserve frequencies up to 20 kHz.
Petelda:Je mi 30 a nic jsem neslyšel
Martin:Those Czechs are annoying, aren’t they? Like Germans, they think everyone has to understand their language.
People, think twice before you post something others may read.
This blog is written in English so I assume the comments should be in English too.
Please, don’t think I’m a czech-hater. I’m from the Czech Republic.
mike:hey man, dont say, that we are like Germans ok… I can show you czech pages, where English guyes are writing in english…
Martin:Hello Mike,
if I see someone is stealing, should I steal too? I don’t think so. Just because those English guys are rude it doesn’t mean we should be rude too.
marduk:“Author” of this sound presents it as the song with tag: “Title: The Buzz, artist: Teen, Album: Adults Suck and genre Techno.” Unbeivable! :))) You can analyze it and find out, that audible frekvencies (app above -25dB) finds in short interval between 17950Hz and 18050Hz. There´s nothing else to hear but unpleasant ratcatcher sound… :)
PETE_cz:Well, I’m 32 and can hear it even on my laptop. It’s quite annoing sound.
Je me 48 :-/
Kačec:hééj, já chcu vědět co tam hrajou :-D asi už su stará škeble (21) že tam nic neslyším :-)))
Honza:I’d say it also depends on your speakers. When I use cheap shitty ones, I (30) can hear the sound clearly as well as my father (63) does. After I plugged in better ones – Creative I-Trigue – me and my father hear nothing at all but my younger sister (26) still can hear it.
If you’re 30+ and still can hear it, i guess you have either excellent ears or poor speakers.
Jirka:Je mi 55 a slyším to zvonění . Čágo
Je to podvod:Vsichni to slysi. Par pubertaku si z vas udelalo srandu.
Jste kokoti jestli jim to zerete!
To je hnusnej pistivej odpornej zvuk!!!
CZBlack.:I can hear the sound clear, it’s a bit disturbing though. Can’t image to set that as a ringtone :) According to my dad it’s possible to hear that for adults as well …
btw: Ten bude mit asi radost z toho trafficu :D
mauddib:fuck dalsi kachna z idnes…
CZBlack.:Mu to tady chudakovi nikdo necte, tak mu aspon trochu helfneme, treba si sem da kvuli nam i nakou reklamu :D
I am 58 and I hear it well. Fortunately I am not teacher!
Jirka

kubik:čau all,tak někomu se povedl záměr,nachytat co nejvíce surfařů a při tom ji vtlačit trochu vzdělání,moc good:-)
Xue:I’m 19 and I could hear it only if I put on headphones and turned the sound all the way up–even then it was so faint that I probably wouldn’t even notice it normally. Makes me worry about my hearing.
Milan:¨To pískání slyším docela dobře v 63 letech.Bude to nějaká kachna.
Bobík:My fader have 43 years and he listen this.
Můj otec má 43 let a slyší to.
Eiculka:Ahojky!!! Je mi 12 a slyšim to dobře. Moje memka ani taťka nic neslyší! Je to fakt super!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OnePiece:i can hear it very loud and clear. im 19, but my guess is its not age related.

yenda:Normally I don’t hear anything, but with equalizer tuned for highs I hear unpleasant high tone, no melody. I’m 26yo.

Winamp:I downloaded it and played the file in Winamp. Apparently it is on a frequency that winamp can’t detect since it did not give any indication of any sound playing on the sound bars.
Fake?
Shexy Schlipper:Anyone else heard that phones vibrate these days? Children these days are mighty special
random kid:i dont think this sound really works..although my parents cant even hear it..but i think the sounds is just meant to trick the mind to thinking its one of does high pitched noise making electronics. our minds are so used to hearing that noise that we tend not to notice, for some of us of course.
mrgogo:helo…
can somebody send me a Mosquito melodies or give some site, that works, to download this melodies?
please contact me on gjutrisa@gmail.com
i am 13 and i can hear it my sis (14) can hear it my mum (38) can hear it and my dad (42) can ear it

[…] Orange Days has published a flash app with the mosquito teen buzz sound. […]
rufus:You can download the Mp3 at www.mosquitone.net
Its a decent effort, but i think there are other versions…
r
I can hear it, I’m 14, and my mother who is 40 can hear it as well. It’s not making me uncomfortable or anything. I don’t understand why everyone thinks it’s so annoying.
Laura:My 55 year old mother could hear it.
kimblurry:i think it might be a family thing cuz alot of people are saying either my grandmacould/couldnt hear it and im 17 and i could/coulnt hear it so it could be all heredatory
also the sound is quite abnormal, some people may hear it and think “oh its not playing like a piece of music, therefore i cant hear it”
or you could just be retarded and forgot that your speakers were switched of :D
Minstrel Ayreon:HOLY COW, that’s loud. For the record I am over 20. ;-)
I can still here the noise emitted by non-flat-screen TVs, too, which I think is at an even higher frequency. Once, in high school, I used an oscilloscope that showed my hearing went up WAY past what the normal range should be. I thouht the machine was broken. Now I think there was something to it.
I also found out I could hear the lowest frequencies of bat echolocation when I went to Carlsbad Caverns. When I described the clicking sound I was hearing to the park ranger, he said that’s exactly what it was.
TajFun:cau sicky, jestli to samy neslysite a nekdo jo a myslite si, ze si z vas dela srandu, tak si to dejte na sluchatka, sluchatka dejte tomu, ktery to udejane slysi, at si poodejde, a schvalne ho vyzkousejte, cvakejte vedle pak to jednou zapnete a kdyz rekne “ted” kdyz cvaknete mimo, tak lze, kdyz rekne “ted presnev tu chvili, co to zecne piskat tak nelze:)
diky moc vsem…. cao ;)
pustil jsem si to do basáku a slyšel jsem brum :) pak mě napadlo pustit to do kvalitnich sluchátek a ono fakt tence píská :) je mi 19
Lukáš:Pouštěl jsem to mamce (37) a ta to slyší… Tak nevim, co je to za blábol!
Ninja:i am 22 and my brother 20 we hear on normal freq. but my other 2 brothers 15 and 8 can hear too but my mom cant hear on normal . bur when i but on winamp on -12 db equa. me 22 and my brother 20 and my mom cant hear but other brother 15,8 can hear normaly but when i put on 12db my mom can hear too. soo all who are old and can hear they have some head phones what change freq of sound or speeker or programs.
Kevin:I could hear it. but alot stronger in my left ear. I think as a musician and a bassist that my hearing has gotten less sensative to low pitches noises. Probably later in my life I will not be able to hear this noise
Takze kdo to nemuzete stahnout posadte se do kresla, dalkove ovladani do ruky, switch on, mute sound a poslouchejte. Je tam hajzlik.

This sucks. If you say it works, I believe you. The MP3 would not play on my Fedora core linux box, so I’ll have to take your word for it.
In any case, the REAL reason it sucks is that SOME people are hypersensitive to sound and with some sounds can experience stress and real physical pain. If you use this technology , don’t be surprised if some guy with a sensory integration disorder runs up on you and punches you out, or worse, drags you into court for the next 10 years, and sues you for every nickel you have….. dumb, bad, stupid idea…
In any case, I’m 52, and I have really messed up hearing, and I can still ehar 20KHz tones, but not really well…..
best regards
Aegis
please send me (mosqito)!! malutka9913@wp.pl PLEASE!!

Juraj:You dumb czechs should either go somewhere else or write in english, because you’re SPAMMING here.
BTW, I used mosquito revamped for testing. I can hear it, parents can’t. Interesting thing.
Jade:Thats mad how some of you can’t hear it… I can hear it clearly. It’s not exactly a nice sound to hear though, but if it means teachers can’t hear it going off in class, no wonder lots of teenagers use it!
Samantha:my mom’s friend who’s 52 can hear it clearly.
that sound makes my eyes water, really! after i turned it off, my ears have been ringing intensly. my mom who’s in her late forties, described the noise as “cancerous”.
Sarah:I’m 14 and can’t hear it!! I turned the speakers up damn loud and put my ear next to it. When I tried this at school (with a machine) I could hear it…what’s going on??
Kylie Kim:i can’t hear it!
anyway, it’s really funny to see so many languages at once..:)
I’m 16 and can’t hear it!
jack:is this kind of a joke or what? i mean everyone knows that the higher the pitch the more difficult it is to hear. and all of a sudden it is an “invention”. i am 40 and i can definitely hear the sound. some people would believe anything…
chuck d:i’m 30. i could hear the 15kHz and 17.5kHz. I work in a loud environment, so I used headphones. I could not hear the 20kHz, however. All 3 of which are found here for download as .wav files:
http://architectures.danlockton.co.uk/?p=72
Question: Why don’t these kids use vibrate in class??
Comment: Its a great way to keep kids from loitering! There is a dell monitor in my office that make a high-pitch hum and I refuse to go anywhere near it. The woman who works at the computer is in her mid-60s and has loss of hearing in her ear, she was surprised when I told her about it!
my mum could hear it….
Mike:Haha that’s so cool I had my mom come next to the computer and she couldn’t hear a damn thing - that high pitch damn near blew my eardrum out.!
Brandon:I can here it very loudly, it is so annoying I played it and ran upstairs and still heard it almost just as loud, with a TV on at the same time, OUCH
Eric:There’s a fairly simple reason for not using vibrate in class- people can hear it. If it’s touching the metal bar of the desk, it’s actually loud, but even if it’s not, it can be heard.
I had no problem with this. My sister and I both could hear it, but my mom, who’s 39, couldn’t.
lainey:20 years and i cannot hear it at all :( Should I be worried? O_O
Fag:I’m 15, I heard it clearly.
My dad is 47, he heard it clearly.
o.O
oldfart:my mpg321 can hear it… but my mplayer cant… i guess my mplayer is much older than mpg321
Kyle H:I am 20 and I can hear it, Ive always said to my parents you hear that? and either the tv was on or something outside was making that high pitch noise.
Cosmo Kramer:yo fools…that thing is cool, im not sure if i can hear it though…but it pisses my dog off…she be running and looking all confused when i put it on…mad funny.
chris:send me (mosquito) richchrm@yahoo.com
Drew:I tried it on my mother who is 52, she could hear the 14khz one but not the 17khz. Parodoxically, she could also hear the 20khz one….go figure. i’m 18 and i heard all three.
저희 엄마는 43살 이신데도 깨끗하게 잘들린다고 하시네요;;
i am 14 and i can barly hear it
MC:I am over 20 and can hear this, it’s almost painfull! I am concerned that this sound could very well cause a seizure in epileptics or people with seizure related disorders. So be carefull, this would be a shitty way to discover you or someone in your family has one of these disorders, definately not worth it for a covert call.
Brandon:Tried it on my mom, she could hear it slightly.
Gregory:I’m 29 yrs old, and I could not hear the tone. So, I downloaded the file and burned it on a cd. Then I used my cd player to feed it back into my pc into the program “Cakewalk” It definitely showed up there, and I could here it.
And to all you teens I am jealous, because I was the type of person who use to be able to walk past a house on the sidewalk and be able to tell which houses had their tv’s on, and none of my friends knew what I was talking about, but there would be this low pitch hum, I can still do it most of the time, but this one got me.
and here is a cool link too, check out this software www.realbizzopponline.com
Alec Eiffel:I’m 30 years old and i can hear it, it’s painfull and annoying (tengo 30 años y puedo escucharlo, los oidos duelen y es molesto el sonido)
Marcus:Age: 40
In a loud office with the volume low I heard it so clearly (and loud) that now my ears hurt.
I listened to all of the ones posted and heard every one of them at the same intensity.
Sounds like you guys/gals have parents that spent way too much time standing in front of the speakers at Woodstock !!!!!!
patti:Age: 34
I heard it too and I found it to be annoying.
Very creative for those teens to use it in school though. I wish we had cell phones when I was in school, let alone ringers adults couldn’t hear.
drs:This so called “technology” is clearly not consistent to any degree. First off, if almost every poster here over the age of 20 heard the sound clearly, and some people under 20 didn’t, it obviously does have something to do with the degree to which people treat their hearing. With our current lifestyles; iPods, mp3 players, psp, etc. it is much easier to mess up your hearing for good, as demonstrated by many of the posters here under the age of 20. Myself, I am under 20 and I can hear the sound fine. But why would anybody in the right mind ever choose this as a fucking ringtone? If you want to not be noticed on the phone in class, then why don’t you put your damn phone on silent? You are more likely to get in trouble because teachers are fed up of this disgusting noise than if you are caught in class with a phone on…I think that many of our new generation kids should smarten up and choose a less shitty way to communicate with each other in class; for instance talking.
Whitney,, 13:I liked that the older people could not hear it but the noise is really annoying,, i think i would buy it if it was a better ring tone
Brunbäck:I’m 17 yeras old and I can hear the sound loud and clear. but I doubt this sound will work as a good ringtone for mobile phones, ’cause there are much more noice everywere else. Besides, why don’t just set the phone on vibration?
Vanessa:It is so loud and clear! I can’t stand it… why would anyone ever use that? The sound still lingers in my ears. In all honesty, to use that as messaging ringtone? You must be desperate. It can seriously f with you hearing… ARE YOU INSANE? There are much better ways to get past the teacher! It takes some brain power! Which you are obviously killing with this noise… well first you would need to be on drugs to even think of using that! and every one knows drugs kill you slowly on the inside, so you are killing yourself, your brain, all for an f’ing message! What the flippin’ penguins are you think of! Just frickin’ stand up and shout out “Hey” to get peoples attentions! Then once you’ve got it tell them what you’ve got to say!
Amber:Im 13 and i could hear it…my 5 year old brother could but not my mom or dad who are 36 so thats cool
matt:DAM THAT IS VERY LOUD AND ANOUING
vızzzzzz:yeah… look it that! pertty cool. I’m … years old and I’m silly because I can hear and I can’t hear this sound…
are you maniac? yeah I guess…
Marino:If anyone over 30 can hear it..Theres one reason: Your Speakers/Headphones are not capable of keeping the High frequency , so they just emit the sound you can hear , so its your speakers people theyre made for regular sound not high frequency tones , im sure on a cell phone it could probably work better.
angelica:Si, MULTI VISTI SOUNDO MUCHO LOUDIE. Ai CADRUMBA MUCHA CHOCHA.
gill:owwwwwww……. headache…..
Name:Yeah…. im 19 and thats the same awful sound that the alarm at Macy’s makes… if you turn it up for some ppl they can hear it, others just cant at all i guess… i can, and if you cant, belive me you arent missing out… its horrible
PS. there is a download link at the top of the page, stop asking ppl to email it to you
Jordan:Can you turn music into this range? I have a website http://www.jacksmannequin.org you can download a few Jack’s Mannequin songs from there.. I’d like to turn a Jack’s Mannequin song into a Teen Buzz ringtone. Is it possible?
BFck:IM 21 AND I CAN CLEARLY HEAR THIS AWFUL SOUND…BUT IT DOES GIVE ME SOME NICE IDEAS…MY PARENTS CANT HEAR IT LOL!
!Parable!:All I hear is a high pitch tone.. very high pitch and it does not vary in wave length, it is a continuous high pitch almost like an alarm clock. Is that the sound everyone of you “Darn no good for nothing teens” can hear? :)
Thanks!
The old Geezer…
I think that sound just made me poo my pants… I am old you know.
Lauren:Hey, how do I make that my ringtone?
Can you send it to me or something?
Thanks, dear
anthony:I am curious as to how to transfer this to my phone. I don’t have web access on my phone because I’m cheap, haha. So that rules out downloading it through mobile web. Any suggestions?
~Anthony
this ring is so freakin gay it so doesnt work like wth it is so gay and doesnt work ya nice try but it deoesnt work so i wana say 2 da person dat made thsi nice try but it didnt work…..gr……..
Layla:I’m 16 and can’t hear it. o_o;;;
Some Stupid Teen:well im pretty sure this is a load of bullshit because even the 40 year old bags of skin can hear it so not much good in the classroom for texting, why not just sneak up on your teacher and whack them with a stick? then they’re unconcious so they can’t hear your normal ringtone! Damn i am smart. all hail the stupid teen!
JUNE:THIS MUST BE SOME KIND OF HOAX.I AM 26 AND I CAN HEAR IT, ALSO I PLAYED IT AT WORK AND ALL OF MY JOB CAN HEAR IT. IN FACT I DON’T KNOW ANYONE WHO CAN’T HEAR IT!!
Punky Brewster:This is a joke.. everyone at my job could hear this sound.. and everyone is over 35..
If you cannot hear this sound, then there is something serious going on with your ears and you should see a doctor…
Who on earth told you this bullshit? That noise is certainly NOT being used by British teens, in school or out - and nor is that sound inaudible to anyone, regardless of age. I’m 33, I can hear it all too well. I’ve played it to older friends in their 40s and 50s, and they can hear it just fine too. And the so-called Mosquito Alarm must be a US phenomenon, because it sure as hell is NOT used in UK stores.
The only people who couldn’t hear this would be people who have damaged hearing already - such as people who have listened to music far too loud on headphones, for example. Which might explain the number of teenagers whinging that they can’t hear it. Which would make it pretty pointless as a ringtone for a teenager, really….
Jessica:yeah i just played the rigtone here on this site for me and another coworker and we couldn’t hear a thing and hes 25 and im 24 so im guessing either it’s true or the download on this site sucks
Meagan:Wow. I’m 14 and I heard it… but my 57 yr old dad heard it too! But then again the volume was way up.. maybe i shoudl try it with the volume half way
Lauren:for all the people saying it’s a hoax
it’s based on who still has high frequency hearing.
i can slightly hear it because i stood in front of speakers at a concert and my ears have been ringing ever since
my twin sister gets headaches from it
does anyone know how to transfer it as a ringtone onto a cell phone?
Annie Satin:That’s really wierd. Because it’s hard to explain the noise to other people. I’m 16, and I can hear it.
It bothers me, there’s something I can’t take about it. Like this slow, hidden pain in my head.
it hurts my head. who the hell would put that as a ringtone? x_x
Pete:I was at work and nobody could hear it. We were using Harman Kardon computer speakers. You can see the speakers here at this link: http://sifter.org/ForSale/cam.20021217.154939.jpg
We had about ten different people that ‘could not’ hear the noise… This was on three different computers at work (I work in the IT department, there are computers all over the place).
Now, I get home and try to listen to the sound on my personal computer. I have these speakers: http://www.tnh.com.vn/tnh/data/tnh_prod/t7700.jpg
Using my home computer with the better quality speakers, I could not hear the tone at 50% volume. Keep in mind, I played an audio CD at this volume and it was LOUD! I turned the speakers up to about 85-90% volume and I ‘could’ hear the tone, and OMG I have a headache now…. But a weird headache, kinda like a weird bruise past my eardrum or something….
Odd…
Devesh:ATTENTION:ok ppl…dis ting is a big frud….my momzz 40 n she cud hear it damnnnn clear……n itzz of no use….jus junk…so don waste ur time,….don beleive me….try it wid sm 1 abover 20.
jeena:did’nt hear the music
Nurgle:Hmmm im 16 and i cant hear it however i can feel its pulse.
Cait:Umm .. yeaa .. i am a teeager && i cood here it .. but my dad coodnt .. it weird .. but i like it !!
Rei Murasame:My name’s Rei, and I’m 20yrs old, female, English-Asian, and absolutely appalled by what I’ve seen here today. At first, I honestly thought you all were joking, because there’s no way that I could imagine people willing subjecting themselves and others to this.
So, in order to educate people a little, I’ll use my knowlege to show you why people should never ever do this, and how some of you here have already permanently damaged your hearing from trying this.
To give weight to my comments, I’ll just clarify that I’m into DSP, mixing, and general sound hardware and software related things, so I’m not just trying to spook you, I’m honestly horrified by this.
Here we go:
When I first played back this the embedded file here, I neglected to turn my fader down, so my tweeters proceeded to blast that high frequency sine at an amazing volume. Luckily for my ears (which I take care of), and my wallet, my reciever/amplifier shut off the sound after 1 second, to prevent damage. I was still rather shaken though.
I knew that the only way that could’ve been been so loud, is if some idiot had gone into an sound editing program, and filled the entire dynamic range with that sound, which in other words, is maximum gain (1db).
Why is that dangerous? Well, lets start with the effects on audio equipment, which you’ve all described quite well so far, in varying states of confusion.
1. High quality audio equipment is NOT designed to extensively playback that kindof frequency at maximum gain, continuously. It can, but its not designed to. Anyone who thinks they can do this without physically damaging their speakers, A-D converter, reciever, amplifier or cell-phone, is clearly out of their mind. It is damaging your hardware, weather you can see it or not.
2. Lower quality audio equipment is not capable of replicating that frequency at that gain. What’ll happen is you’ll encounter aliasing, meaning you’ll get a pretty pattern of other lower frequencies, and not the ear-piercing 19.5 - 20khz that was intended. People will then claim they can ‘hear it clearly’ (yeah, way to go, you heard 14khz, not 20), when they have in fact not heard 20khz, because your hardware CAN’T REPRODUCE THAT SOUND. Doesn’t change that fact that it’s at 1db though, so your hardware is still getting strained and damaged.
3. mp3, even at setting VBRnew V1, lowpasses at…. wait for it…. 17khz. It should be obvious that encoding those sounds with a setting equal to that or lower, without using a flag to disable the lowpass, will mean that your high frequency sound will be excluded from the mp3. As in, not there, at all. Ever. That explains why some of those files just don’t work.
4. Bad windows mixer settings, or cheap-o sound card. This applies to most people, as unfortunate as that is, because kmixer.sys does all kinds of things to a sound before it gets out. So unless you’re kernel streaming past that, or you’re really lucky, you’ll end up with the symptoms I mentioned in #2, but for slightly different reasons.
Now that we have the machines covered, lets get into the damage this causes to actual living things. We can fix or replace hardware (and cost outselves money for no good reason), but we can’t, we absolutely can’t fix our hearing once its damaged. Once it’s gone, it NEVER comes back.
In point form again:
1. The gain on those things to make them audible, is ridiculously high. Just as you wouldn’t want to play regular sounds loud enough to make you feel disgusted or in pain, why would you want to use a high pitched sound loud enough to bring you pain? It’s like the difference between getting hit by a truck, and getting hit by a knife the size of a truck. Don’t they both hurt? The high frequency sound would be the knife in this case.
2. The SPL is just too much. When your ears HURT, it means they are trying to tell you, “This is causing real damage.”. Would you place your hand in an oven and ignore the pain if someone told you it was a good alert system? I think not, because your hands are useful, right? Same with your ears!
3. Your ears DO NOT have the ability to self-repair. They DO NOT HEAL. Once you damage them, it is permanent. When your ears hurt, it’s telling you to stop whatever you’re doing. When you don’t stop, the nerve endings, and/or the sensitive hairs attached to them begin to get destroyed. A symptom of this is ‘tinnings’, which is the horrible ringing sound some of you have been hearing. Welcome to hearing loss, that’s the start of irreperable damage right there.
4. The idiots who invented this neglected to mention that the REAL reason some adults can’t hear the sound even when its produced correctly, is that their ears are already damaged - it’s the high frequency hearing that goes first. And by listening to this destructive sound, you’re just sending yourself to join them.
5. There is no such thing as ‘getting used to it’. If you’re finding it easier to tolerate those sounds, it means one of two things, either you’re:
a. Drunk, and more suceptible to ear damage, (leads to b anyway) or;
b. Your ears are getting damaged. Eventually you’ll be unable to hear anything that high pitched, or, you’ll be stuck with tinnings, where that horrible ringing will always SEEM to be there, and it’ll never go away.
Why the hell are there not laws against this? This is the grossest noise pollution I’ve ever heard of. It is literally robbing people of their hearing. I shudder to think of the effect it’s having on all of these young people.
The adults who came up with this, should, and probably do know better. And if I saw them on the street, I’d hit them in the face with a shovel for even THINKING of doing this. Shame on those store owners who are actually broadcasting this at fellow human beings.
I’m just disgusted by this.

I can hear the sound, my mom can hear the sound, my dad can hear the sound, my sister can hear the soumd. It’s annoying and everyone can hear it. So umm what’s the point of this again….? Sorry i just have a huge headache after 10 seconds of this so-called ringtone.
maggie:i’m 14 and I could hear it fine. I wish people would stop posting rude comments about it. it’s a yes/no question. deal with it. and stop posting in different languages. it doesn’t make you sound cool; you’re not rebelling against anything. this is an english blog, so post in freaking english.
btw. if you can’t hear it: it’s not the links fault, it’s yours. so stop complaining and go jump off a bridge.
Rei Murasame:Blelow, Maggie, congratulations on missing my point COMPLETELY. Read my post again.
It. is. damaging. your. hearing.
You all need to stop this, and immediately.
Shmoo Zero Omega:Really, this is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I mean, besides the medical reasons that other people mentioned, it just seems to be prejudiced against young people, and is nothing but obnoxiousness. Boo to it.
Marik:Coming from somebody whose in a band, Rei Murasame is correct, this kind of noise can severely damage your hearing. If you can’t hear it its because of one of two reasons, A) Your Soundcard and/or Speakers suck, or B) You’ve just (or previously have) damaged your ears, which isnt good because as mentioned damage to your hearing is IRREVERSABLE! Sure it might screw with mosquitos, but amplify the sound and see if it screws with you. Its one thing to create new technologies to repel misquitos, but jumping to one that can hurt the human ears is foolhardy.
Wanna know what will happen when/if this is released? Lawsuits from people whose ears have been damaged. No, its not a good idea, no, its not a good product, and frankly I’d rather smear myself with Off! than have to listen to that even for a few seconds. To those who say “Well its usually in your pocket so you arent going to be affected much”. First off, the amps that produce the ringtone sounds can be pretty damn loud. Secondly, you need to bring the phone up to your face to either see whose calling, to answer the phone, or to shut off the phone and/or hang up on the call. This may not seem like much at first, but subject your ears to it in little bits constantly and your going to winde up with a hearing aid instead of a good mosquito repeller.
mcred23:And with this Mosquito alarm and ringtone, we’re going to see all these kids start going deaf by age the time they finish school. Between these damn Mosquito things and kids playing their I-Pods and other music things way too lound, we’re (I say we, as I am 16 years old)this generation is going to have some major hearing problems when they get older, far more so than previous generations.
In other words, I think this Mosquito alarm/ringtone is a bad thing.
HalfDemonInuyasha:Yes…this sound is extremely bad for your hearing.
Michelle:Holy… o.o;;; Two seconds of listening to… /that/ was pure hell. It gave me a headache of a magnitude I’ve not felt in months… That /can’t/ be good for anyone. @_@ How can anyone think that… /tone/ is safe and a good idea? I feel sorry for the munchkins that actually /use/ that thing to get away with a ringtone as opposed to the simple vibrate function… Not only can they save their hearing, but they can still know when they have a call. I wonder what the delevopers of that ringtone will think when they discover how truly painful and damaging their little creation is… I sincerely hope they made an honest mistake in not realizing the danger this tone presents to ears….
Love Hater Kazumi:W.T.F. This is just stupid. I don’t know why you guys would want to do this. That seriously fucking hurt, and I would never use this as a ringtone due to the fact that I’m a vocalist and I value my hearing as much as the music I listen to (and that’s a lot). Willingly sacrificing your hearing just so you can get away with text messaging in the middle of class means you’ve got some fucked up priorities and/or you’re stupid. I agree with Rei wholeheartedly, and I want to beat on these people, too. Anyone who’s thinking of using it as a ringtone will really want to think twice about it….maybe even three times if you’re really concerned about text messaging in class without getting caught. (Here’s an idea: put it on vibrate or don’t text message during class in the first place!) It’s just awful how people are actually using this sound as a ringtone, and that storeowners are playing these ringtones around their customers. Come ON. IT’S DAMAGING YOUR HEARING! IT NEEDS TO STOP!
-LHK
Hassan Abbas:This is highy idiotic, why in the name everything logical would you use something that not only damages you hardware, but your phyical body is absurd. Clearly, some drunken imbecile created this. For the love of God, spend your time creating something that is beneficial to us, and to those fools who love to text message in class, Do it after school you idiots.
Chaiti:what on earth was this supposed to be…and while v media ppl are just blowing it out of proportion, it fails to make lil or say no sense at all to me! some creepy losers created it! isnt there a vibrator in ur cell which ur teacher cannot hear….or wait “invention”…..even u cant hear! helloo???? if ur so desperate to text and recieve calls during class…..just bunk that class!
Chaiti Narula

Meister:Rei is right. Where did you get that? This sound test sounds more like speaker testing to see their limits than a sound test to check your audition according to an age. Check with several speakers or heaphones but don’t complain if you damage anything. I think it’s a hoax to destroy your speakers… up to you.

John Smith:Oh fer cryin’ out loud and jumpin jehosiphat that is the WRONG TONE.
No wonder everyone can hear it. The only people who can’t hear it are
dead ones or the computer speaker got disconnected somehow (no disrespect intended
if that is the case). Especially no disrespect intended if you are in fact dead.
The tone here on this website is around 1000 Hz it sounds like. I am
58 and I can’t hear anything above 10,000 Hz but I can sure as heck hear the tone
on this website.
Fun to listen to though.

However we played it to two teachers at school and they said they couldnt hear it. it depends on how good your hearing is and kids usually have better hearing than adults. teachers must have such bad hearing from all the kids screaming. and btw we cant put our phones on viabrate coz they still make a sound and sometimes you can even feel it through the floor … im speaking from experience here. but i wouldnt like to have it as a ring tone my ears are still hurting from listening to it 20 minutes ago.
Also please post comments in english so that i can understand. Thanks!

why should the high frequency inventions stop here? firts poleice use it to drive kids away from loitering, now cell phone ring tones. I am curently workign on a project that im calling MicroSound. it is goign to be a program similer to MicrosoftSam (type words in and he says them.) except this will generate Sounds between 13000Hz and 15000Hz that will make out words. it will be a great way to cheat on tests becasue all the students will be able to hear it, but teachers wont be able to.
Hunnee:I am well over 40 and can hear the sound. It is annoying and uncomfortable.
Schu:20, can hear it.
“John Smith”, there seems to be a low tone, probably less than 1000 Hz, and a much higher tone several octaves above, perhaps as high as claimed. That’s what I hear, and my ears are extremely sensitive. I imagine this is a low quality version of it, and perhaps a clean version would sound less like speaker hum.
I also saw these in a TV ad here in Australia tonight, clearly marketed at teens of course. Quite depressing really. I thought the sound was pretty similar, and I couldn’t hear the lower hum described, though that may have been maked by all the other sounds in the ad.
They called it the mosquito too.
Dannica:I am 13 and could not hear that tone. Is that bad?
David:hey pleese send this 2 me i can hear it but how can u hear this tone outside its not that loud i guess it is for the classroom i am 14 and i need this for class so send it 2 me plz
jack:WICKED!!!!!1 thanks so much that is cool!

i’m 16 and i can hear this sound..but my father and my mother are 46 and they can hear it…….why??
.:Shibby:.:MRDÁÁÁM!!!!!!!
Ben:I believe as one gets older, their hearing decreases, such as their TBS or taste bud sensitivity (parents eat weird things you would have never ate as a kid due to sensitive taste buds), that is what I believe it means. It’s not like When you hit 21, oh shoot, I can’t hear that anymore.
For someone like me who plays music loud in my headphones everyday and attends frequent concerts to be able to hear it, I was appauled when a 15 year old could not hear it.
Andy Z:I’m 18… I can’t hear a thing. Probably because I’m a musician so I think I’ve lost the hearing capacity I’d need to hear this. That and I use head phones all the time. oh well… not that I would ever need to hear it anyway.
Duffel:I’m a musician 2.. if u cant hear it… open it in a wave editor and put the volume up by about 10db.. u should be able to hear it then… and i’m sure so will the dogs in a nearby radius. :) hehe
Duffel:o.. i’m 18 and couldn’t hear it at 1st (without 1st turning up the wave volume)
funny thing to do around musicians (or ne1 in fact) is get a tone generator and start at 10kZ (no1 can hear it except yr kanine bud) …and slowly tune it down… most ppl pick up at around 25-30kz depending on their hearing, past, work environment etc..
hehe . . . ppl start rubbing their ears and think they going insane..
i love phsycho acoustics.. so much fun!!

brittney:I tested out on my parents who are both are around 50 and they couldnt hear it. but my sister and my younger sitser and i could hear it and im 14. so maybe it depends on the person.
Jinxy:Is it suppose to hurt when you hear it? I’m 16 btw.
mexicano4790:All these high pitched sounds are actually being developed as weapons to repell rioting crowds and i heard that some stores are using them to keep teens away but i’m sure that is untrue because they would be driving away their customers. But Yes it is supposed to hurt you, it is actually an ultra-sonic sound wave and if strong enough, it can cause nausea and diarhea. And actually these types of ultrasonic sounds can be heard by anyone depending on what the sound is like, for example- scientists have created a device that plays the cry of a baby backwards at 140 decibles, which is 20 above the amount at which we feel pain.
None:I played it on my mp3 and it made a loud buzzing noise. Help?
tercis:hi! čus je mi 12 a slysim to uplne v poho =ó)) i am 12 yer. I can hier it !!! byebye!! tak čus národe !!! :-D
Frick:Please some one send me
SMaj:I can hear it but only just, and I’m 37. Damn, my mum was right about all that rock and roll when I was younger. I’m going to test this one every youngster I know, lol.
SMaj:Addendum - probably the biggest factor for me in not hearing this is years of scuba diving which inevitably caused a minor amount of hearing loss due to barotrauma. I have an exceptionally diffcult time hearing when there is a lot of background noise which this seems to represent (which really sucks for me since I work in a warehouse). I too used to be able to hear a tv or computer monitor but it seems not so much any more. Whether this is related to my diving or to the fact that people now leave their monitors on 24/7 (like me) I don’t know. If this was a scientific forum I would be interested in collating some statistics, but alas… It is also impossible so make any serious judgement from this page, as Murasame suggested there is a great varibility in peoples sound cards, speakers etc and that aliasing isn responsible for most older people hearing it on here (just for the record Murasame, Macs have optical output), but I disagree that you are damaging your hearing. I am fairly certain that with high end gear in a controlled environment we would find that younger people can hear it and older people can’t. I think the worst you are doing is accelerating an inevetable process.

Chuck:I played that with my speakers not up very high and it made me extremely uncomfortable to say the least. It actually gave me a slight headache. Like another poster, I can hear the high pitched squeal from a tube television. I’ve been able to for as long as I can remember and I’m now 20. I can tell a TV is on by just walking into someone’s house.
Ancient:All i can hear some faith clicks that’s it…some few clicks in the beging and at the end and im 26….and some clicks in the middle somewhere
DeNisKa:What is that?This is unbeatiful called=((( I don’t know that…
Mira:nechcu nich jako rikat me je 14 a nic sem neslysel :D
99octane:I’m 35 and can hear it perfectly in a noisy office.
Medically speaking, it’s much more probable that a disco-addict teen ager will have difficulties hearing it, having damaged his ear’s high-frequency sensitivity rather than an aged person, even if it’s a fact that high frequency sensitivity declines with age. Former disco-addicts are obviously in a far worst ;) condition.
I frequently go to a shooting range, but I always protected my hearing properly ;)
I could definatley hear it I bought it for my cellphone and i think that it is awsome! i am 15 and i can hear it perfectly it is very highpictched but it doesnt really hurt my ears I love it! it is so cool
vil:owww… my ear is still ringing after listening to that sound… :(
Jason Lei:I’ve made a program with different frequencies ranging from 8kHz-22.4kHz. You can download it on this forum where I’ve posted it. It’s in a .Zip format:

It’s copyright under my name (the program not the sounds).

Thats King 2 You:it seems dat peepsunda 20 cannot hear it….u sure u got the right sound?
age 15 - i cn hear it tho lol.
Gosh that is so annoying. I’m 19 and that is so irritating. That would drive me crazy to use as a ring tone. It is so irritating I would probebly forget that I have it as a ring tone.
Alex:Im 14 and i can hear it perfectly… i dun get why ur saying only peoiple above 20 can hear it… anyways can u send it to me in a phone format plz? thnx
John:I can hear it and so can my parents and they are both over the age of forty.

Nemam pravdu?
EN:
It is possible to hear something even if you are older. Because of lost synchronisation during playback of sound recorded / sampled at 44KHz there are lots of interferences. These are to be heard by almost everyone…
Am I right?
[…] I hope this is true. Serves the assholes right for creating something as horrible as a “teenager repellent”. Anyhow, if you’d like to see if you can hear the sound (I still can, at the ripe old age of 23), click here. […]
Dman:yo you guys are so dumb…of corse you can hear it if u turn the volume to like 300dbs
Sarah:I’m 18 and I listened to it about 6 months ago and thought I couldn’t hear it. I always hear ringing in my ear. But, I realized that I can hear it, all it does is hurt my ear though. It sounds like electricity. I don’t really need it on my phone. Just use vibrate, it isn’t that hard to do…
paul:I am 97 1/2 years old and i love the sound of the ringtone. :)
Rachael:I’m 24. I can just barely hear it. I can’t even really call it ‘hearing’ it’s such an odd sensation. Makes my head hurt. To me, it sounded like high-pitched, quiet static fading in and out.

kill joy:Please send it to me , Unable to down load it from the above links
Pallida Mors:I’m 44, have downloaded all the tones and hear all of them very well (on my Sony W300i cell). Most give me a headache after 10 seconds or make my ears hurt. But then I’ve protected my hearing most of my life. My wife who’s 37 can’t hear most of them though.
argaar:It’s strange but I done a test and I can hear from 8khz to 16khz and from 20khz to 22khz not the middle tones (17khz to 19khz)

DJ Sammy:Hello Interesting insight into . I have often thought about this myself. I think high-pitched ringtone is somewhat related. On Sunday I have the day off, so will look more into it.

omg….. i read the last comment i posted here and i realized that was 2 yrs ago! i was 13 now im 15. downloaded it but i still need to test it on my phone.
btw..
mad wierd, every1 hears it diferent. alot of people say its mad loud but i say its quiet and people say it’s an annoying sound but it doesnt bother me (well actually, nails scraping against a chalkboard doesnt bother me either). also, my grandma can hear it!!!! shes 84. but my mom cant and shes 44. but its true: u dont need it if peoples phones vibrate anyway but its still cool
Upgrader:LILLIAN (AGAIN), :)

Hi everyone!
Old people sometimes can hear the sound. Depends on the speakers you use to play it. We tried it at school with teachers. They could hear it from one phone, but they couldn´t hear it from another one. (Both phones used exactly the same mp3 file…)
Upgrader:Yes, was and such :)
Simply it is necessary to try…
my mum is 35 and she can hear it but my dad is 45 and cant hear i can her it
