Orange Range is one of the reasons I call this blog Orange Days. I really love them and have done so since August last year, which was almost two months before I started the blog. Back in the summer of 2004 is when they really took off in Japan and was without a doubt the most popular band. After getting to know them I realized that they weren’t just famous for “Asterisk”, which was the theme for the incredibly popular anime series Bleach for a long time. Their song Shanghai Honey is the theme for the Japanese drama Orange Days, which I must admit was a pretty great source of inspiration when it comes to the name of this blog;-).. anyway, the idea came from a mix of the two. They also had a song on the Fantastic Four soundtrack, which is a pretty big deal for a Japanese band. It’s not normal for them to pick Japanese songs and even though I didn’t happen to like that particular song, it’s still pretty cool. And I also later realized that the song that plays during the trailer for the 2005 summer blockbuster hit Densha Otoko was “Love Parade” also by Orange Range. Also a remix of Viva Rock was used in Naruto, another really popular anime. Hana was the main theme in the movie “Ima, Ai Ni Yukimasu” and their song called Kizuna was the theme in the TV-series version.
ORANGE RANGE is one of the most popular bands to come out of Japan to date, having released 3 full albums and 13 singles in just over 3 years. Their second album, “musiQ”, was their breakthrough hit seling over 2.6 million copies and became the best selling album of 2005. The 3rd album was recently released on October 12, 2005 and sold over 500,000 copies in its first week. The album has held the #1 chart position for two weeks now. Also noteworthy is their highly successful single Hana. The single sold an impressive 661,000 copies from its release in October 2004 to the end of November 2004. Then it sold even more copies from December 2004 into the rest of 2005 (the 2005 Oricon year). So far, the single has sold 997,000 copies and is the 3rd best-selling single since 2002 with the 1st being SMAP’s Sekai ni hitotsu dake no hana being #1 with sales of 2.5 million and Hamasaki Ayumi’s H being second with sales of just over 1 million.
Anyway they are my favorite Japanese band still. Here are 5 GREAT songs by them:
